Episode 67 is here!

(Ok, so Squarespace have changed their image editing settings so please excuse the format of the show notes until I figure out how to edit images with the new changes because at the moment I have no clue! ;-) )

I was very excited to interview today’s guest Eric Adams not only because he has such a great story, but also because he is doing some truly tremendous work as President of Brooklyn Borough in sharing the low fat, whole food, plant-based message to the 2.6 million people living in Brooklyn.

For the past three decades, Eric L. Adams has served the residents of Brooklyn as borough president, state senator, police officer, and coalition builder. In November of 2017, he was reelected for a second term to represent all of Brooklyn as borough president. Born in Brownsville and educated in the City’s public school system, Eric is committed to ensuring Brooklyn’s bright future by helping each and every Brooklynite reach his or her full potential. Eric has worked to make the popularity of Brooklyn’s brand translate into prosperity for the over 2.6 million Brooklynites that call the borough home. He is a big believer in the power of connections, of bringing together people in need of services with resources that have long existed but have been underutilized. As a legislator, Eric’s record in the New York State Senate was one that underscored his strong commitment to the rights of those from every walk of life, including protecting the right to privacy, supporting marriage equality, defending a woman’s right to choose, as well as fighting for students’ rights, workers’ rights, and animal rights. His work involved efforts to prevent racial profiling, gender discrimination, domestic violence, elder abuse and in August 2018 Eric announced that the first-of-its-kind, a plant-based lifestyle medicine program out of Bellevue hospital. Through his urging, the city invested $400,000 into this pilot and are excited for the medical community at large to see the power of plant-based eating! Impressive work indeed!

In this episode Eric shares his own story of recovery from Type 2 Diabetes and his passion for whole, food, plant-based living and the work he is doing to share this message with the members of his borough and honestly, there were so many great moments in this interview I could barely contain my enthusiasm. ;-)

One of my favourite quotes from President Adams was in relation to the struggles people face when transitioning to a plant-based diet when he said:

“A bend in the road, is not the end of the road”

I really love this as I think for many folks, perfectionism holds them back from taking that first step on the road to improving their health.

Eric’s 3 Tips included:

  1. Get the Information - Try out the Forks Over Knives meal plan

  2. 1 Step At A Time - Remember, this is a lifestyle not a diet.

  3. Try to bring your family along for the ride!

“Be DIFFERENT. Be THOUGHTFUL. ENJOY LIFE!”

You can read more about Eric’s Success Story over at the Forks Over Knives website and read all about his work as Brooklyn Borough President here.
