Episode 74 Doctor Allan Kalmus Lost 100 Pounds Without Exercising

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited for school to go back! ;-)

Episode 74 is here and it’s with Dr Allan Kalmus who at the age of 58, hit 284 lbs. His joints were aching from the Statin drugs to lower his cholesterol, he was winded walking up stairs and reliant on taking blood pressure medicine that wasn't working all that well. 

Finally, Allan finally decided to took a good look at his red face in the mirror. He was fooling himself into thinking that he was healthy, but fat. In his entire life, he had never been thin. Allan tried dieting on his own, Weight Watchers, High Protein, Low Fat, Low Carb, etc., etc. but what ever weight he lost he would just put it back on plus a few for good measure. The problem was that each year he would put on a few more pounds. But 5 lbs a year over 20 years is 100 lbs that he was carrying around and he was not comfortable. So, after reading some of the good information that local cardiologist, Joel Kahn, M.D., was putting out on the web about preventative medicine and plant-based lifestyle, he made up his mind to give it a try for a year.

Allan thought if he could improve his cholesterol numbers, lower his blood pressure and avoid heart surgery like his Dad had at age 72,  just by changing what he ate, there wasn't really any down side to it. So he bought a vegan recipe book, picked up a few things like Kale, Quinoa, Steel Cut Oats and Nutritional Yeast that he’d never heard of before and started cooking.

Allan’s waist went from a 44 to 32, his neck went from 18.5 to 17 inches, he lost 100 lbs without exercising, his blood pressure normalized (105/68) and his cholesterol numbers got into a very healthy range (Total Cholesterol 137). With his doctor's blessing, he stopped taking all of his cholesterol and blood pressure medicines.  He can now go up and down stairs without getting winded, his face lost its red color and his aches and pains are gone.  

Fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts are much cheaper per pound than meat, fish and poultry too, so Allan felt it was a Win Win!  

Today he eats as much as he wants, as often as he wants and continues to lose weight. Allan wants to stay as healthy as possible for as long as he can. His wife and kids are everything to him and he wants to stick around to see them for as long as possible.

Allan quotes Dr. Esselstyn from The Cleveland Clinic: "Obesity is a food borne illness."  If he can prevent the diseases that go along with obesity like Diabetes, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure and Stroke by simply changing the way he eats, why wouldn't he?
